Close The Door

I’m gearing up for more recording sessions this week, and I’m a little overwhelmed with how to proceed. Part of the reason why I get so knotted up with anxiety is because I insist on waiting for an evening in absolute solitude. This trend actually started at age four when my dad would set me up in his recording studio and let me have at it — singing songs, telling stories, and being adorable. But before any of this could commence I would kick my dad out of the room and insist that he close the door behind him. Here’s a bit of audio that sums it up:

So to this day I can’t really fall into this process without having the room and the house, or even better, the whole planet to myself.

After the early tracks are recorded I don’t mind having feedback and collaboration, but those first few hours can be so rough and unpleasant (with expletives splattering the walls) that I really wouldn’t want anyone (especially those I love) to witness it.
