Storm

On Friday July 13th the most incredible lightning/thunder storm I’ve ever seen/heard in my life laid itself on top of the North Sound and pummeled us for hours. There wasn’t even a trace of wind, so the monster came and then wouldn’t leave. Jake was camping on Cypress Island (which was a source of concern all in itself) and I was alone on the edge of a cliff watching the sky rage before me.

The Pacific Northwest is not used to weather conditions such as this. We know all about wind and rain but the behavior of this storm was unpredictable and seemed that it was capable of anything.

At 4pm I was laying in the sun when suddenly the air cooled and cloud cover seemed to appear out of nowhere.

By 5pm the sky looked like this:

Then the lightning and thunder began.

Suddenly this weird hole opened up in the sky and it appeared as though it was actually sucking clouds up into a kind of reverse funnel. It scared the crap out of me because I’d never seen anything like it and I wasn’t sure what it was going to do.

By 5:30pm the hole started to dissapear but the lightening and thunder were just ramping up.

At 5:40pm this wall of fog started heading towards the shore.

The next couple of hours consisted of a sky that changed drastically from moment to moment.

6:38pm

7:20pm

8:02

Then I lost power and cowered in the dark thinking about my husband and hoping that he was okay. The lightening was messmerizing and unrelenting.

By 10pm things were starting to calm down. What a day!

Wow! Wonderful pictures! I can only wish that I could learn how to capture storms so perfectly as you have here!

These photos are ….I’m at a loss for the right word. Amazing is so overdone but yet they are somewhat amazing. The second one could be used for a movie still to describe the “Rapture” . Spooky & beautiful at the same time. Nice work!
