Organizing Nature

When walking through the woods with a camera it can be overwhelming to make any sense of the chaos of that environment. It is easy to ignore because it feels random to us; our brains have trouble processing the seemingly infinite bits of information.

However, a forest is actually a very organized system and if one thinks about that fact while looking for images then suddenly (depending on where we’re standing, where we’re looking, the time we spend, and how we see) patterns, and symbols, and little moments rise to the surface. The environment takes on a new significance and suddenly you are connected to it. Breaking the vastness into little pieces is now something I do whether I have the camera or not. It’s a delightful way to see — like the natural world is whispering secrets that you’ve suddenly learned to hear.
