I have yet to meet a person who doesn’t want more stuff. I, too, find myself wanting new clothes, better furniture, and the newest gadgets. But mostly I desire the ideal home recording studio and a more diverse collection of musical instruments. These wishes provoke less guilt because they are tools of creativity. But really, how much does one need? I haven’t done any recording on my perfectly capable equipment since December and it’s not because I’m missing some critical device; it’s because I’m lazy.
So if the problem is me then having all of the perfect “stuff” won’t matter anyway. “Stuff” should be the reward for productivity — not an excuse to avoid it. And as anyone who has ever tried to build a home studio knows — it is never really complete and there’s always something that could be added. Truthfully, I have everything I need and more.
It’s possible to get so obsessed with our creative tools that we forget the source of all of the magic that is art-making. So keep it simple and travel light — both in life and in art.
