Surges & Scarcities

Carving Time

I’ve been thinking a lot about my recording habits and how to build some kind of schedule that I follow with the same dedication I give to other aspects of everyday life. This is nerdy, but it was fun breaking the week down: I spend 60 hours a week sleeping, 36 hours a week at work, 6 hours a week exercising, 4-8 hours a week cooking, 4 hours a week cleaning, 1.5 driving. That leaves roughly 50 hours for other stuff. It doesn’t seem unreasonable that I take a percentage of that 50 hours of “leisure time” and dedicate it to music. That means carving out of slot in the week and adhering to it. Unfortunately, my capricious creativity doesn’t like to work on a schedule, but it needs to. If I only write and record when I’m inspired or when the house is empty, then I’ll continue to accomplish things at this snail pace.
